March 4, 1963: The Beach Boys release “Surfin’ U.S.A.”. The song was set to Chuck Berry’s “Sweet Little Sixteen” and intended as an homage. Unfortunately, the band didn’t get permission from Berry first (most likely because he was in prison at the time). When Berry threatened to sue, The Beach Boys agreed to give him songwriting credit and most of the royalties.
