July 11, 1970: Three Dog Night top the charts with their version of “Mama Told Me (Not To Come)”, a song written by Randy Newman and originally recorded (but not released) by Eric Burdon & The Animals three years earlier. According to lead singer, Cory Wells, Newman was skeptical about Three Dog Night’s decision to cover the tune, but that changed once the song became a hit and the royalty checks started rolling in. Newman reportedly called Wells and said, “I just want to thank you for putting my kids through college.”
